Solstice Canyon
The 550-acre Solstice Canyon is one of the most attractive parks of
the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Although enjoyable
year-round, the best time to go is in the late winter, early spring
months after a normal or better than normal rainy season. Currently,
the park is closed to vehicle parking until sometime in 2003, while
they expand the parking area and facilities. Still, you are allowed
to park outside and enter on foot. The main trail, Solstice Canyon Trail,
is a paved road that follows a stream and is shaded by a fantastic woodland
of sycamore, bay, and live oak trees. The highlight of the park is the
waterfall on the east side of Tropical Terrace (a burnt out former mansion)
at the end of either the Solstice Canyon or Rising Sun trails. Another
trail, the Dry Creek Trail, leads to a spectacular, although seasonal,
150-foot waterfall.
