Biblical Father-Son Types

Duality. Duality in the sense of complementary, of greater-lesser, of source-recipient (or channel), or outer-inner. This duality is first and foremost revealed to us in the relationship between the Father and the Son.

  • John 10:30: I and the Father are one.
  • John 14:28: The Father is greater than I.

Not dualism. Dualism is a philosophical view which holds that the mind and body are distinct and separable from one another (i.e. mind-body dualism) or the spiritual view that there are only two fundamental concepts, "good" and "evil" (i.e. cosmological dualism)..

Typology. Numerous "types" in the Bible and in Nature parallel the Father-Son relationship, having greater-lesser, source-recipient, or outer-inner characteristics as shown below.

Dual types in Creation

Creation week. The Creation Story (Genesis 1:1 - 2:3) unfolds in largely dualistic forms.

Day Greater Lesser Plus Ref. Commentary
1 Heavens (outer) Earth (inner)   Gen. 1:1
1 Day/morning Night/evening Day Gen. 1:5
2 Waters below Waters above (sep. from below) Sky Gen. 1:7 Water above and below
3 Seas Earth (sep. from Seas)   Gen. 1:10
3 Trees bearing seed Plants bearing seed (fast growing) Vegetation Gen. 1:12
4 Greater light (Sun) Lesser light (Moon) Stars Gen. 1:16 Sun and moon

6 Beasts Livestock (domesticated) Creeping things Gen. 1:25
6 Man Woman (sep. from Man)   Gen. 1:27

Also note: Days 1, 2 and 3 correspond to days 4, 5 and 6 in that the first three set the framework or "form" while the last three "fill" the framework or form with occupants, called "host" (i.e. multitude or great number).

Day Form Day Filled (with "host")
1 Light 4 Light bearers: Sun, Moon and Stars
2 Separated waters, Sky 5 Sea creatures, Birds
3 Land, vegetation 6 Land creatures, Mankind
