Diet Before the Fall

And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." Genesis 1:29 (ESV)

On the third day of Creation, God created two types of vegetation for man: plants yielding seed and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed (Genesis 1:11). Both an "upper" (tree) and "lower" (plant) form of food. (There is a third form of vegetation which is mentioned on the sixth day of Creation, which is the "green plant" (Genesis 1:30) given to all the animals.) The superiority of the "upper" (tree) food is made evident when we understand that the power to live forever came from a special tree of life in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:22).
