Vaccines

The two books I have read and recommend are:

Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective

It is a lengthy topic to discuss and difficult to summarize. Basically,

  1. Flawed statistics. The statistics cited behind the benefits of vaccination are often flawed and misleading. For example, few people know that the polio death rate was dramatically decreasing before the polio vaccine was introduced in 1954. From 1923 to 1953 the polio death rate in the United States and England had already declined on its own by 47 percent and 55 percent. In European countries which refused to inoculate against polio, the polio epidemics also ended. Another one is the pertussis (whooping cough) death rate. It had decreased by more than 75% before the vaccine was introduced in 1936. Finally, on the measles vaccine introduced in 1963. In the United States and England, from 1915 to 1958, a greater than 95 percent decline in the measles death rate had already occurred. In fact, the death rate from measles in the mid-1970's (post-vaccine) remained exactly the same as in the early 1960's (pre-vaccine).
  2. No guarantee to not get the disease. For example, immunity against pertussis is not sustained. Some studies suggest only a 40-45 percent effectiveness. Susceptibility to pertussis 12 years after full vaccination may be as high as 95 percent. In 1986, in Kansas, 1300 cases of pertussis were reported. Of the patients whose vaccination status was known, 90 percent were "adequately" vaccinated. In a 1978 survey of 30 states, it was discovered that more than half of the children who had contracted measles had been "adequately" vaccinated. And in 1985, the federal government reported 1,984 non-preventable cases of measles. But 80 percent of these so-called "non-preventable" cases occurred in people who had been properly vaccinated.
  3. Serious side effects. There is a wide range of serious side effects believed to be caused by the use of vaccines-for example, SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), SBS (Shaken Baby Syndrome), encephalitis, and developmental disabilities (such as autism, dyslexia, epilepsy, mental retardation, and brain dysfunction).
  4. Foreign vaccine content. Some vaccines are made of foreign proteins, such as monkey kidney cell culture and calf serum for the polio vaccine and the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine which is prepared in chick embryo. Viral vaccines introduce pure genetic material (DNA and RNA) into the human recipient which potentially can bring about genetic changes into the invaded cells. Many contain chemicals such as: phenol (a deadly poison), formaldehyde (a known cancer-causing agent), thimerosal (a mercury derivative), aluminum phosphate (toxic), aluminum and oil adjuvants (cancer-producing in lab mice), actone (a solvent used in fingernail polish remover), and glycerine (toxic effects include kidney, liver, and lung damage, diuresis, and gastrointestinal damage and death).

From a Christian perspective, the thought of invading (assaulting) the human body with foreign (animal, chemical, and viral) substances seems contrary to God's design. Add to that the fact that the statistics are misleading and often flawed, and the realization that even if you take the vaccine there is no guarantee of not contracting the disease, and the chance of a debilitating if not life-threatening side effect; and you have a compelling reason to refuse them for yourself and your loved ones.
