Bible References on God

All Bible references are from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

Exodus 23:20-21 Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared. Give heed to him and hearken to his voice, do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression; for my name is in him.

It was Christ the Son who led the children of Israel out of Egypt and spoke God's law on Mount Sinai. The Father's name is invested in the Son and therefore He has all the attributes of God. . . . The fact is that Christ, God's Son, speaks in the name or character of His Father. God the Father here says that its HIS NAME, His character that dwells in His Son.

APPENDIX to Patriarchs and Prophets, by Ellen G. White

NOTE 7. PAGE 366. THAT THE ONE WHO SPOKE THE LAW, WHO CALLED MOSES INTO THE MOUNT AND TALKED WITH HIM, WAS OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, IS EVIDENT FROM THE FOLLOWING CONSIDERATIONS: {PP 761.3}

CHRIST IS THE ONE THROUGH WHOM GOD HAS AT ALL TIMES REVEALED HIMSELF TO MAN. "BUT TO US THERE IS BUT ONE GOD, THE FATHER, OF WHOM ARE ALL THINGS, AND WE IN HIM; AND ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, BY WHOM ARE ALL THINGS, AND WE BY HIM." 1 CORINTHIANS 8:6. "THIS IS HE [MOSES], THAT WAS IN THE CHURCH IN THE WILDERNESS WITH THE ANGEL WHICH SPAKE TO HIM IN THE MOUNT SINAI, AND WITH OUR FATHERS: WHO RECEIVED THE LIVELY ORACLES TO GIVE UNTO US." ACTS 7:38. THIS ANGEL WAS THE ANGEL OF GOD'S PRESENCE (ISAIAH 63:9), THE ANGEL IN WHOM WAS THE NAME OF THE GREAT JEHOVAH (EXODUS 23:20-23). THE EXPRESSION CAN REFER TO NO OTHER THAN THE SON OF GOD. {PP 761.4}

AGAIN: CHRIST IS CALLED THE WORD OF GOD. JOHN 1:1-3. HE IS SO CALLED BECAUSE GOD GAVE HIS REVELATIONS TO MAN IN ALL AGES THROUGH CHRIST. IT WAS HIS SPIRIT THAT INSPIRED THE PROPHETS. 1 PETER 1:10, 11. HE WAS REVEALED TO THEM AS THE ANGEL OF JEHOVAH, THE CAPTAIN OF THE LORD'S HOST, MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL. {PP 761.5}

John 5:43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.

Christ came in HIS FATHER'S name, His Father's character. If Christ the Son was a self-existent Divine Being, being the same age as the Father, being equal in power and authority as the Father, then He would have His own name and character in which to declare Himself. But Christ doesn't do that. And not because He decided to voluntarily subordinate Himself to the Father and play the role of a son as is the teaching of the trinity doctrine. The whole theory that Christ made a decision to subordinate Himself to the Father is nowhere substantiated in holy scripture. He voluntarily took on humanity but He was ALWAYS subordinate to His Father. The trinitarian must provide the scripture(s) which prove that Christ was NOT subordinate to the Father prior to divising the plan of salvation. Proverbs 8:22 declares that God POSSESSED Christ before the creation. It doesn't say that the Son volunteered to be a possession of God. Voluntary possession is not in actual fact a real and true possession. Christ is the Son OF God, not God THE Son.

Colossians 2:8-10 See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fulness of life in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Wouldn't the fullness of the Godhead include ETERNAL EXISTANCE -- From everlasting to everlasting THOU ART GOD? The answer to that question is no. For as previously stated more than once, the fullness of the Godhead that Christ had WAS GIVEN unto Him by the Father.

Colossians 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. God the Father PERMITTED and was PLEASED that HIS fulness should dwell in His Son.

Ephesians 3:9 and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things.

It was by Christ's hand that all things were created, but its the Father who ultimately has credit for the creation. Christ fulfilled the will of the Father in the creation. As He also fulfilled the Fathers will when He was on earth. It was God, the Father who said to His Son: "Let US make man in our image. . ." Christ did the will of His Father both before and after the creation and incarnation. Christ the Son was always subordinate to the Father.

The Father was the AUTHORITY here and HE directed the Son in the creation.

1 John 1:3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Where's the fellowship with the Holy Spirit if the Holy Spirit is indeed a separate divine being?

1 John 2:22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.

A hallmark of antichrist is the denial of the Father and the Son - their relationship! The Holy Spirit is not mentioned. Does that mean that antichrist only acknowledges the so-called third Divine MEMBER of the trinity?

2 John 1:9 Any one who goes ahead and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God; he who abides in the doctrine has both the Father and the Son.

Interesting verse! It says above that the transgressor ("who goes ahead") does not abide in the doctrine of Christ. And therefore that transgressor is not reconciled to GOD. This is in harmony with Jesus' declaration that those that do not honor the Son also do not honor the Father. The verse goes on to say that those who do abide in the doctrine of Christ have BOTH THE FATHER AND THE SON! Where's the Holy Spirit? If God is three in one as the trinity teaches, why is the emphasis on the relationship with man confined to the Father and the Son only? The answer is simple. God is not three divine beings in one unity of purpose. God is ONE PERSON, the Father, Christ is His Son and the Holy Spirit constitutes the PERSONAL presence of BOTH!

Revelation 1:7-8 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, every one who pierced him; and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Psalms 50:1-3 The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. Our God comes, he does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, round about him a mighty tempest.

Isaiah 44:6 Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: "I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.

Yes, the above text does say that Christ is "the Almighty". Christ says so Himself. But, and yes, here comes another "but", what needs to be mentioned is what else Christ has to say about Him being "the Almighty": (KJV) Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Christ's almighty power WAS GIVEN to Him. All power = almighty. The Father GAVE unto His Son this power. He didn't possess it on His own. Jesus says that His Father is "greater than I". Who is greater - the one who GIVES the almighty power or the one who RECEIVES the almighty power? Everything that Christ has was GIVEN unto Him by the Father. And Ellen White agrees with the bible:

"All things Christ received from God, but He took to give. So in the heavenly courts, in His ministry for all created beings: through the beloved Son, the Father's life flows out to all; through the Son it returns, in praise and joyous service, a tide of love, to the great Source of all." Desire of Ages, pg. 21

Ellen G. White rightly places the Father as the great source of all life and Christ, His Son as a RECIPIENT of the Father's life and power.

1 John 2:22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.

The Trinitarian in an attempt to NOT DENY the full equal, eternal Godhead of both the Father and the Son, do much worse. For this teaching denies the relationship of the Father and His Son. The trinity teaches that Christ is NOT the Son of God but is in reality another divine colleague.

Trinitarian defender: The word “God” means “DEITY” “DIVINITY” it is not a “family” name. It is the NAME OF GOD. God is not a family-- it is your view of literal birthing and literal Son and Father that speaks of a Family of Gods. The Trinity speaks of the ONENESS OF THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE DIETY IN WHICH THERE ARE THREE PERSONS WHO ARE ONE in perfect unity of thought, purpose, motives and of the same essence.

Response: Its your understanding that the meaning of God is Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Instead of using the word "family", the word "committee" could be used. For I guess "family" would denote a relationship. But the trinity DENIES the relationship between God and His Son. The trinity, in fact denies any kind of a relationship. They only think alike. So then, God, according to the trinitarian view is a committee of three divine beings who think alike. And that would constitute the alpha and omega of any sort of relationship with the trinty. The name of this committee being "God". Its all wrong! God is NOT a committe of three or a unity of three divine beings. God is ONE PERSON - the Father (John 17:3). The committee of three cannot be established by scripture.

John 20:28,29 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Yes, the bible says that the Son is God BUT its by virtue of INHERITANCE. The Son inherited His Father's attributes. (Hebrews 1:4, Colossians 1:19)

Actually, we do not deny the deity of Christ, never did. We do not deny the oneness of the Father and the Son. Christ Himself tells us "I and my Father are one". However, unlike the trintiy teaching we also do not deny the literal Father/Son relationship between God and His Son. That's the major difference. Its the trinity teaching that denies the scriptural account of HOW Christ is God. And another major difference is that the trinitarian side CANNOT biblically substantiate their claims while those that contend for the literal sonship of Christ and His inherited attributes of Godhead can and have been biblically substantiated.

Luke 1:35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

The above verse does not show the trinity. It shows that God caused Mary to conceive with His Son by the agency of His Spirit. The trinitarian view depicts the Holy Spirit as being Christ's true father since the Spirit caused conception. And yes He "shall be called the Son of God". For that's who He is! This doesn't deny that Christ was God's Son prior to the incarnation. Not at all. God speaks of His Son in the Old Testament. Previously I provided the following scriptures that prove this.

Proverbs 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what [is] his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?

Psalms 2:12 2 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

And Ellen White, who was for sure NOT a trinitarian agrees with the biblical truth that Christ was God's Son prior to His incarnation:

“In His incarnation He gained in a new sense the title of the Son of God. Said the angel to Mary, ‘The power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God’ (Luke 1:35). While the Son of a human being, He became the Son of God in a new sense. Thus He stood in our world—the Son of God, yet allied by birth to the human race.” (Selected Messages, bk. 1, pp. 226, 227)

Jesus was begotten, not procreated. We are procreated. God first created mankind and gave mankind the power to reproduce, thus procreation. Christ was BEGOTTEN of God, not procreated. Yes, there is a difference. And being that Christ, the Son, by virtue of being begotten of the Father inherits all the attributes of the Father, there wasn't a demand on the part of the Father for His Son to render Him obedience. Christ's very nature, because of His literal sonship to the Father, would cause Christ to think and to act JUST LIKE the Father. Hence His name is Michael - "One who is like unto God". To be LIKE someone is NOT TO BE THAT SOMEONE. The Son is a perfect reproduction of God the Father - as the bible says He is the "express image of His person and brightness of His glory".

Now, the trinitarians have the burden of proving scripturally that Christ's sonship to the Father is symbolic. This has not been done.

Hebrews 1:8-10 But of the Son he says, "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, the righteous scepter is the scepter of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness beyond thy comrades." And, "Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

Yes! That is most definetly true. God the Father acknowledges His Son as God. And look at what else God the Father acknowledges:

Psalms 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

The Father is the God of the Son. If the Son has complete and fully equality of rank, then the Son would also be the God of the Father - but lo and behold, there's no scripture to sustain that view. Yes, Christ has a God. Both before and after His incarnation the scriptures bear testimony of that fact. His Father He called "My God" when on the cross and in many other scriptures. But never is the Son the God of the Father.

Galatians 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law.

Yes, indeed, Christ was appointed before the foundation of the earth and the above verse is beautiful - God SENT HIS SON to be born of a woman and fashioned in the likeness of humanity. The Father SENT HIS SON, THEN He was born of a woman.

Conclusions from the above Bible study

  1. The Son of God was subject to (under the authority of) His Father before and after the Incarnation.
  2. The Son of God received all things from the Father to give. He received to give.
  3. The Son of God was the Son before AND after the Incarnation.
