The Chiastic Bible Project

Description: The Chiastic Bible Project is an attempt at organizing the entire Bible in its natural chiastic forms. It will be implemented as a web application targeted primarily for tablet and smartphone usage.

Business model: The web application will be a two-tiered subscription service—both a free and paid subscription service. The free version will allow users to view the top-level chiastic structures of the entire Bible but only the details of one book—the Book of Genesis. The subscription-based version offers full access to all features of the web application. Pricing for subscribers will be at a magazine price of $10 to $20 per year. With proper advertising it is hoped that a target audience of 100,000 subscribers (comparable to Christianity Today) can be reached within 5 years of launch. Alternatively, an ad-based model like BibleGateway could be considered—see Freewebsitereport on BibleGateway (last updated 5/20/2013).

Development Phases

  • Phase I. Gather and consolidate all available studies on chiastic structures of the Bible onto one website in basic html format.
  • Phase II. Develop a web application with basic Bible reader features which also allows dynamic grouping and expansion of chiastic sections for easy reading and comparison.
  • Phase III. Develop advanced features such as social networking, Hebrew/Greek lexicons, etc.

  • (YouTube) Second Function of the Central Axis. Discusses the chiastic structure of Genesis 21:13-21b. An example of how a chiastic structure may be viewed dynamically.
  • HTML5 vs. Mobile Apps: The Good, Bad, and Ugly? Published 9/1/2013. The drawback in mobile apps: (1) Two main distributors Apple and Google under their supervision and instructions. If they don't like what you do, your marketing channel is closed! (2) Limited space and attention in each device. (3) Proprietary technologies. (4) Profit sharing with Apple and Google is high.
  • Financial Times: 'There is no drawback to working in HTML5'. The article makes insightful comments:
    • People drawn to tablets for longform style of journalism. They spend longer on content, more pageviews per visit, and longer visits.
    • Smartphone is a bite-sized experience where people are going in looking for one specific thing.
    • Tablets offer a great reading experience over desktops.
