Genesis 5:32 - 10:1 — The Flood Story

5:32 Shem, Ham, and Japheth which Noah fathered

  6:1-3 Son's of God marry daughters of men; God's judgment in 120 years
    6:4-9 Nephilim on the earth; great wickedness; man would be blotted out
      6:10-17 Promise of a Flood; salvation through an ark
        6:18-20 Covenant with Noah and every living creature
          6:21-22 Food in the ark
            7:1-3 Command to enter the ark
              7:4-5 7 days waiting for flood; pronouncement
                7:6-10 7 days waiting for flood
                  7:11-17 40 days waters increase; fountains burst & windows of heaven open; God shuts Noah in (closes door)
                    7:18-20 Mountains covered; ark floats
                     

7:21-24 150 days waters prevail

8:1-2 But God remembered Noah (Noah means "rest")

                      8:3 150 days (end of) waters abated
                    8:4-5 Mountains uncovered; ark rests
                  8:6-9 40 days (end of) waters decrease; window of ark opened; raven and dove sent forth
                8:10-11 7 days waiting for earth to dry; dove sent 2nd time; olive leaf
              8:12-13 7 days waiting for earth to dry; dove sent 3rd time; no return
            8:14-19 Command to leave the ark
          8:20-22 to 9:1-7 Animal sacrifice, blessing, and provision outside the ark
        9:8-10 Covenant with Noah, future generations, and every living creature
      9:11-17 Promise of never a Flood again; rainbow as a sign
    9:18-19 Sons of Noah went forth; from these the whole earth was populated
  9:20-29 Noah became drunk; Canaan cursed; Noah lives another 350 years
10:1 Shem, Ham, and Japheth - their generations

Notes:

  • Four stages of entering/leaving the ark. Four stages of entering the ark "as commanded" (6:22, 7:5, 9, 16). Four stages of leaving the ark-once a raven, thrice a dove (8:7, 8, 10, 12).
  • Seven verbs of "ascent". Seven verbs of "ascent": increased, bore, rose (7:17), prevailed, increased greatly (7:18), prevailed mightily, mountains were covered (7:19). Seven verbs of "descent": subsided (8:1), were restrained (8:2), receded, abated (8:3), came to rest (8:4), continued to abate, mountains were seen (8:5)
